A journaling game of the making or breaking of a vigilante hero.

As you play Bleakest Knight, you’ll imagine yourself as a masked vigilante at an early stage of their career in crimefighting, who is about to face the toughest Night of their career. Victory or defeat over the supervillains whose schemes take place tonight will be make or break for you, the rise of a new legend or the end of a footnote in the annals of masked crimefighting. Optionally, you can choose to act as an external narrator following the actions of such a vigilante over the course of the night. The cards you draw provide seeds for a narrative: as you write your journal it’s up to you to interpret the cards and weave your story.

This game is based on Flee the Flood.

You will need:

  • A journal (or paper)
  • A pen or pencil
  • A deck of 52 cards + 2 jokers (or you can print out the cards provided with the game)
  • A six-sided die

Fantastic solo system! I've seen a lot of solo games on Itch.io, but what makes this one and Flee the Flood unique is how open-ended they are - because they don't rely on specific journaling prompts for each card, the rules can be adapted to any story with rising stakes, as long as you come up with new things for each suit and each face to refer to. 

One thing I'm curious about: is there any reason the Threat is laid out in a specific way? From what I understand, you lose when you have a full set of 2 through 10, regardless of the shape they're in.

You're right that technically you can put the cards in a simple row or other arrangement. But there was a conscious decision behind the arrangement: 

In Flee the Flood, the shape of the Flood is symbolic of a wave (likewise, the rectangular shape of the Raft represents... well, a raft!). Bleakest Knight inherits the Flood shape from the base game, except in this case the wave is a crime wave!
